Top 10 Takeaways from ‘Show Your Work’

A book by Austin Kleon

If you are an artist or even if you’re not an artist, this book gives you reasons to show your work.

Have you wondered about what you’re good at? Have you wanted to try out new things? Just for the fun of it maybe?

Well, if you are anything like me…

Who am I?

Let me paint a picture

Interested to try out many things

Do about 30 % of what I wish to do (Let’s say talk 😉)

Spend time and money on 15% off those things

1% converts to any real value (By value, I mean the world and you have some appreciation for it)

For some, this 1% figure is slimmer; but I’m happy to have just made it to the other side. Thus, started BootUpEngineer.

I wouldn’t entirely say this book motivated me to start a personal blog, but I’m convinced of the narrative it holds to #ShowYourWork and, it could push me to bump up my 1% figure.

I’m going over the top 10 takeaways I had from this book, hopefully, this helps you to show your work and give this book a read!

PS: These are paraphrased to get a point across.

  1. When you share your work, have the guts to own it. Be Proud of it. It’s your work, and no one can take that away from you.
  2. Make the stuff you love; talk about the stuff you love, and you will attract people who love the same.
  3. Be Ambitious. Keep Yourself Busy. Think bigger and expand your audience.
  4. Today, there is an easy way to put out your work while you still master it.
  5. The real difference is between doing something vs doing nothing.
  6. Share something small every day.
  7. If you expect to be found, you will not. The world owes you nothing.
  8. Don’t be jealous of others’ victory; try making that happen for you.
  9. Everyone likes a good story; you need to understand that and narrate one.
  10. Everything is about connections, present yourself a chance to connect with like-minded people. Show Your Work

I agree some or most of these points may seem to be pulled out of context; you may have a more fundamental feeling about all this.

‘Why bother putting your work out on the internet?’ It’s one, to try out things that you are passionate about and another to put them out there.

I agree with most of it, but not all.

If you would like my take on this, do leave a comment down in the window.

Hope you guys are slightly motivated to try this book!
